The genus Agraulos is Greek for dwelling in the field or living outdoors. Vanilla is New Latin and refers to a genus of orchids

Habitat

The Gulf Fritillary is a strong flier so they can be found in a variety of areas but prefer open fields with nectar plants

Life history

Males patrol the host range looking for females. Mated females lay their eggs on the tendrils or tips of the leaves. The caterpillars feed on the host vine until they pupate on the vine. In the warm parts of their range they over winter as adults

Flights

There are multiple broods each year and since they may over winter as adults it is possible to find adults flying year round in the warmest parts of their range

Fun Facts

Each spring a small percentage of Gulf Fritillary migrate north in search of new host plants. A large fall migration is not known for the Gulf Fritillary which implies that those adults are taking a one way trip. While the northern migration does happen finding a wild adult north of its range is rare
